2017-18 is our 10th Anniversary season. Watch for news and updates. There's a lot going on at The Gate!
Fresh faces shine at The Gate
New Talent Showcases are a tried and true method of getting stage time for developing talent. Novice performers gain experience and exposure. Theater companies, actors and agents see a lot of value. Audiences observe wildly uneven performances ... and occasional brilliance. Solid performances by Gate newcomers made for a very enjoyable evening.
The Gate's Friday showcase at the AUA in Chiang Mai, titled An Evening of Poetry, Songs and Monologues was a a surprising departure from the typical tired assemblage of oft-repeated audition pieces.
Director Stephan Turner chose a number of contemporary performance art pieces as well as all the favorite monologues and skilfully matched them to the performer's strengths. The results were there for the full house audience to see! They enjoyed original songs, standup, dance, beatboxing and even an electric hula hoop exhibition.
The upcoming season, opening with Ira Levin's Deathtrap (directed by Rick Pokrajen-Harmon, November 2-5), is The Gate's 10th. If tonight's showcase is any indication, the 10th season promises to be the best yet.
In keeping with our mission statement, The Gate is seeks to enhance development of youth in the theater arts through workshops and cooperative ventures with local schools. Outreach productions and classes are open to young people from 13 to 18 years of age. They focus on providing quality theater training for the beginner exploring acting for the first time as well as advanced level study for the young actor with previous experience. Classes are geared towards developing imagination, concentration, working with others, exploration of character, and the development of technique in acting. Learning to respect people and the creative process is essential in the program. These training opportunities place students in a position to play the young roles in productions staged by The Gate. The Gate also seeks to empower young people to strive for excellence in their lives, while embracing an atmosphere of safety that encourages exploration. Click here for an Audition Form
