The Gate Theater Group (TGT) is Northern Thailand’s pioneering English-language theater company and a registered Ordinary Partnership in Thailand and a US 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural organization.
Founded on the principle of "Theater Without Borders," The Gate serves as a vital transnational bridge between Chiang Mai and the international arts community. We unite Thai artists, expatriates, and visiting international performers to stage compelling dramatic works, cultivate local talent, and spark meaningful cross-cultural dialogue through the intimacy and power of live performance.
As a 100% volunteer-powered ensemble, every contribution, ticket purchase, and donation goes directly toward funding stage productions, artist travel, and educational community workshops.
To enrich the cultural landscape of Northern Thailand through professional-caliber, accessible English-language theater that engages, challenges, and connects a diverse, multicultural community.
Produce Meaningful Repertoire: Present approximately three high-quality productions each season, actively prioritizing works by Thai playwrights or classical and contemporary scripts translated into English whenever feasible.
Cultivate Local & International Talent: Provide an inclusive, collaborative home where resident actors, visiting artists, and local technicians hone their craft alongside one another.
Empower Youth Through Dramatic Arts: Partner with local schools, international academies, and universities to mentor youth in both stage performance and behind-the-scenes technical craft.
Stage Consequential Stories: Use theater as a catalyst for social consciousness, presenting works—including Readers Theater and documentary drama—that examine urgent human issues such as migration, justice, and human rights.
The Gate Theater Group was founded in 2006 by veteran American actor, director, and educator Stephan Turner. Drawing from decades in Chicago’s renowned ensemble theater movement—including leadership roles with the Stage Actors Ensemble of Chicago, The Performance Loft Theater, and the Gary Creative Workshop—Turner recognized that while Chiang Mai possessed a flourishing visual and traditional arts scene, it lacked a dedicated home for contemporary and classical English-language drama.
Partnering with local educators and the American University Alumni (AUA) Language Center under then-Director John Gunther, The Gate established an artistic home at the historic AUA Auditorium. In 2007, the company staged its breakthrough inaugural production of The Dodo Bird, marking the official debut of Northern Thailand’s first English-language theater company.
From its inception, The Gate was conceived not as an enclave, but as an open crossroads. Over twenty years, that vision has grown into a dynamic transnational network:
International Artistic Exchange: We maintain an ongoing creative conduit between the United States and Thailand, facilitating artist travel, shared repertoire, and cross-cultural collaborations—such as co-producing the inaugural Chiang Mai Fringe Festival in partnership with San Francisco’s EXIT Theatre.
Theater of Conscience & Global Advocacy: Our stage has regularly confronted urgent human questions. Landmark productions include Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s death-row documentary play The Exonerated, human-trafficking awareness productions, and The Asylum Monologues staged in partnership with BABSEACLE to illuminate the global refugee crisis.
20+ Years of Masterworks: More than 30 major productions have graced our stages, including acclaimed regional stagings of James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy, Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, and D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game.
Artistic education is woven into The Gate’s DNA. Rooted in Turner’s academic background heading the Theater Arts Department at Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) and lecturing at Chiang Mai University (CMU), the company expanded its community footprint in 2018 by establishing Chiang Mai Theatrics (CMT).
CMT created Thailand’s first structured English-language program offering training in both technical stagecraft (lighting design, sound engineering, stage management, set construction) and performance methods (vocal control, Stanislavski ensemble technique, improvisation, and scene study)—ensuring a steady pipeline of creative talent for Northern Thailand.
Now celebrating our 20th Anniversary Season, The Gate Theater Group continues to push creative boundaries. Whether staging intimate, site-specific performances in neighborhood art spaces or mounting full-scale mainstage productions, our founding truth remains constant: theater knows no borders, and our gate is open to all.
The Gate Theater Group is built by the community, for the community. Whether you are an experienced performer, an aspiring technician, a volunteer, or an arts advocate, there is a place for you here.
Auditions & Crew Calls: We hold open auditions and technical crew calls for every production throughout the season.
Workshops: Participate in seasonal training sessions covering acting, voice, and technical stagecraft.
US 501(c)(3) Tax-Deductible Support: As an official US 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, contributions from US taxpayers are fully tax-deductible. Your support directly funds artist travel, production materials, venue space, and student workshop scholarships.
