Founder & Managing Artistic Director, The Gate Theater Group

Stephan Turner is an accomplished director, producer, actor, and educator whose career spans decades of groundbreaking theatrical work across two continents. As the founder and Managing Artistic Director of The Gate Theater Group (TGT), Stephan has spent nearly over twenty years pioneering, nurturing, and elevating professional-quality English-language theater in Northern Thailand.

A Generational Passion for the Stage

Stephan’s creative roots run deep. Raised in a household steeped in artistic storytelling, his connection to the stage was sparked by his father—a prolific playwright, producer, and performer best known for writing the original screenplays that launched the iconic Dolemite cultural phenomenon.

Carrying forward this creative drive, Stephan established a formidable reputation in the American theater scene. Based in the Midwest, he served as Artistic Director for both The Gary Creative Workshop Theater in Indiana and the Stage Actors Ensemble of Chicago, and founded the influential Performance Loft Theater in Chicago. Across these spaces, Stephan established himself as a versatile, total theater artist—equally adept at directing, scenic design, lighting, producing, and leading ensemble casts.

Cultivating English Theater in Northern Thailand

In 2006, Stephan brought his artistic vision to Chiang Mai. Sensing a burgeoning local cultural scene that lacked a consistent, high-caliber platform for English-language stage performance, he set out to build one from the ground up.

Rallying local artists, educators, and community members, he founded The Gate Theater Group. With the gracious partnership of Mr. John Gunther, then-Director of the AUA Language Center, The Gate secured a historic home on Ratchadamnoen Road and staged its breakthrough inaugural production, The Dodo Bird. What began as a bold experiment swiftly evolved into a beloved cultural fixture in Chiang Mai.

Education, Mentorship, and the Next Generation

Parallel to his independent directing career, Stephan served for many years as the Theater Arts Department Head and Drama Teacher at Chiang Mai International School (CMIS). His tenure in the classroom cemented a lifelong dedication to youth arts education and cross-cultural mentorship.

Today, The Gate operates on a core dual philosophy:

• Harnessing Local Talent: Empowering actors, directors, and designers from both the Thai and international resident communities to take the stage.

• Cultivating Future Artists: Fostering youth development through hands-on technical workshops, masterclasses, and educational collaborations.

In 2018, Stephan expanded this ecosystem by co-founding Chiang Mai Theatrics (CMT). Functioning as a sister production arm to TGT, CMT bridges technical stagecraft with performance training—delivering professional lighting, sound, and scenic support while hosting comprehensive acting, improvisation, and character-exploration workshops for adults and young performers.

A Distinct Theatrical Legacy

Under Stephan’s direction, The Gate Theater Group has mounted dozens of acclaimed, conversation-starting productions—ranging from intimate character studies and taut courtroom docudramas like Hangman and Restive Souls to large-scale classics, innovative adaptations, and international collaborations such as the Chiang Mai Fringe Festival.

Recognized as a legally registered Ordinary Partnership under Thai law and operating with 501(c)(3) nonprofit lineage, The Gate remains a pioneer: the first organization of its kind in Thailand to provide continuous, English-language technical stage support alongside performance-based community theater. Through bold leadership, disciplined craft, and an unwavering belief in the power of live performance, Stephan Turner continues to shape the cultural heartbeat of Chiang Mai’s arts community.
