PAMELA TEVES

Picture
Pamela Teves was born in the Netherlands started acting in university and became totally smitten with it. She then decided to make it her profession after finishing her law studies. She speaks English, French, Italian, Portuguese and German and has been acting since 1978.

This is her first time working with The Gate Theater, after 42 years of professional engagements. Among them: Wicked, Of mice and Men, Duet for one, The little Mermaid, My fair lady, Me and My Girl, Powerwomen ,Cabaret, Ice, etc. etc.
Pamela has appeared in over 14 films and also in a Soap Series for

Malonie Hewstan

Malonie most recently appeared in An Inspector Calls. She is also  an artist, photographer and gardener. She has experience in community theatre as a set decorator in Canada where she lives and with The Gate on the play, Big Hunk O’ Burnin Love and Harvey. Malonie has been a member of The Gate for four years. 

Hannah Huff

Hannah Huff worked with The Gate Theater for the first time during the 2020 season as Sheila in An Inspector Calls. This is the first main stage production she had been involved in for over two years. She has since appeared as Myrtle Mae in Harvey. During her high school career, Hannah was involved in seven different productions, including Pride and Prejudice and You Can’t Take it With You. She then pursued a degree in theater performance at Baylor University. While she left Baylor after only a year, she maintains her passion for theater. In her spare time, Hannah writes, paints and draws. She also enjoys playing the flute and reading. 

Ann Fink

Ann is originally from Baltimore, Maryland. She has been performing in some way since she was 5 years old, ironically starting with the musical the King and I. She is a trained classical singer and has performed in everything from Broadway musicals to operas and operettas. Ann is thrilled to have the Gate Theater in Chiang Mai and to be part of its growth. The Laramie Project was her theatrical debut with The Gate and she was most recently seen in The Exonerated.

Polly Szantor ​

Polly became stage-struck at age thirteen when she played the child’s role in Roar Like a Dove. Since then she has performed in plays, musicals, movies
and in her own cable TV show for children, Miss Polly’s Playtime. Her true
love is the stage, and here in Chiang Mai she has acted in the Vagina
Monologues, the Yoni Monologues, at Villa Virtuosa and with The Gate Theater in Focus on the Actor. Most recently she presented her one-woman show, Marcie, at the Chiang Mai
Fringe Festival.

Toby Willis

Picture
 Toby started performing at university in the UK and after moving to Brighton, was involved in many musical productions; Me and My Girl, The Baker's Wife, Sweeney Todd.  As a high school drama teacher, his role as director flourished.  He has directed straight theatre but his love of musicals remains. Most recently he took on the difficult task of directing and also serving as Musical Director for Sweeney Todd, to critical acclaim.

Douglas Bonner

Douglas is an Emmy-winning filmmaker who began performing for paying audiences at the age of 9. He has worked both behind and in front of the camera for more than 3 decades. He comes to Chiang Mai after 10 years working as an actor in the Chinese film industry. He’s thrilled to work in a play set in his hometown, which tells of the powerful social change in that era.
Doug most recently appeared in The Gate's 2020 production of Driving Miss Daisy and in 2018's "Almost Maine". 

Lucy Coombs

Lucy's prior acting career consisted of an minimal part in a one-act play in high school. Fifty some years later, she resumed her thespian pursuit in Chiang Mai. She has no further aspirations. 

Lucy is no stranger to The Gate Theater, as she has spent many a performance working behind the stage. She has also added her creative talents to many of the props used in the past productions. It was her special touch that created the almost real jukebox in The Dodo Bird.  She added her unflagging energy to The Laramie Project.

Neville Powis

Neville was born in England, Neville Started acting in the late 70’s in Amsterdam. He co-founded the Amsterdam Chamber Theater (ACT) in 1982.  
With the Gate Theater Neville organized a series of one act plays in 2014 called From the Ridiculous to the Absurd and played Gary Peter Lefkowitz in The Gate Theater’s production of ‘I Hate Hamlet’ in 2015. He co-directed a new actor’s workshop with Stephan Turner this past summer and appeared in An Evening of Monologues & Scenes which was sponsored by Chiang Mai theatrics. Neville played the role of the “Inspector” and toured internationally 
over twenty years ago. He is since re-lived the part and directed at the same time for The Gate during the 2020 season. 'Theater is always a part of my life. Acting is in my blood’

Paul Garnsey

Paul is an Australian expat living in Chiang Mai for four years. He’s grateful for the fun social scene and cultural entertainment offered by The Gate Theater. His most recent stage performances were Mr. Birling in An Inspector Calls, Dr. Chumley in Harvey, Henry in Cosi, and the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz. He wrote and acted in Gold Coast productions of Shark Hunter, Brother Lee Love’s Live Circus Extravaganza!, and Dirty Mingus. In Chiang Mai, he loves getting lost in the maze of sois in the Old City.

Nat Hix

Nat appeared in a number of Gate Theater productions including The Exonerated, The Christmas Choir, and Space. His directing experience began back in the 1960's when he was the program manager for Up With People, a South Carolina touring music ensemble. Nat is also a member of Toastmaster International. Nat most recently worked with The Gate as Assistant Director for Driving Miss Daisy.

Leonard J Garbutt  jr.

Leonard is from Toronto Canada – Is of unusual character and background by chance he translated his wide technical and fabrication talents into a Love of Theater with Beach Community Players from 1985 – 1995.
 
Giving first to master and apply theater sound effects for “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night” thus knowing he had found a new joy to grow upon. Further in growth to take on different and multiple roles within creation of live theater. Noted for designing and building special electro/mechanical effects and properties details to bring to life the laboratory of Victor Frankenstein in “Frankenstein” all while growing into  Stage Management. 
 
When he first arrived in Thailand in 2017 found passing by a information booth hosted by The Gate Theater in Chiang Mai. He exclaimed “I Love Theater” thus quickly he joined our group to once again will support multiple roles of English Language Theater here in Chiang Mai. Now in 2019; something new and challenging he appeared in his first role as an actor in “The Dodo Bird”.

Somporn Sonthiporn

Somporn Somporn was born in Bangkok, spent her childhood in
Lopburi, and was educated in Norway. She later moved to the UK with her family, returning to Chiang Mai in 2007 to raise her children. She has always been passionate about reading and love watching period drama and stage plays. Somporn has quietly enjoyed supporting The Gate since her daughter was a student of Stephan Turner’s at CMIS. She has most recently appeared in Harvey during the 2020 season, Almost Maine in 2018 and Big Hunk O' Burnin Love ​in 2017.

Bernie Miller

Bernie appeared in his first Gate Theater production during the 2020 season as Dr. Sanderson in Harvey. He has been in Chiang Mai for two years and comes here after two years in Cuenca, Ecuador where he appeared in productions staged by the local theater group there, Azuay Community Theater. In his previous life in New York, he studied and performed with the Anna Panaro Studio for five years before abandoning the stage for a life of corporate responsibility. He thanks The Gate Theater for the chance to continue performing and urges ongoing support
from the Chiang Mai community for the important work the Gate Theater does to promote live theater in the city.

Suman C. Tharan

Suman  has always been interested in performing since a young
age. His first appearance on television was at age 10. He has been in several stage roles
including musicals such as Oliver and Aladdin, comedic parts in Up Pompei and Art and has
directed plays including Hardy Boys and The Mystery of where Babies Come From and A
Gay Thing. For The Gate Theater he has directed Almost Maine and acted in Big Hunk O’
Burnin Love. Suman can be seen on TV and a few Hollywood movies and is happy to be
back on stage in this production of Harvey.

Pim Kemasingki

Pim is Thai/British, owner of Trisila Company Limited, publisher of Citylife magazine, CityNow! events guide, and CityNews online.

She has lived in Chiang Mai pretty much most of her life, though has also gallivanted off to live in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Canada, Switzerland, Scotland and Israel over the years.

Judy Mandel

Judy, at the tail end of a career as a criminal defense attorney, arrived in Chiang Mai and resumed some old interests. You may have seen her in The Reindeer Monologues, August Osage County, The Pirates of Chemo, The Yoni Monologues or at the Fringe, Queerscape or Act Up. Other passions include Butoh Dance and 
Flamenco. Judy appeared as Veta Louise Simmons in The Gate's 2020 season's production of Harvey

Jeff  Lynn

After seeing their production of The Odd Couple, Jeff joined The Gate in 2012 to play Boolie, Daisy's son in Driving Miss Daisy.  He performed his role in the Chiang Rai as well as the Chiang Mai shows. Shortly before this he had caught the acting 'bug' again while playing Bob the Builder for CMIS elementary students' programs. He is the High School Learning Support Teacher at CMIS where he has also performed in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and The Sound of Music. 

As a youth, Jeff had roles in Dick Whittington and His Cat, A Christmas Carol, and in Tyl Eulenspeigel's Talking Donkey for Charleston WV's community theater. He was Russ in The Gate's production of The Dodo Bird, which, like Driving Miss Daisy, went on the road to Chiang Rai.

Jason Moehring

Jason appeared most cerently as Elwood Dowd in The Gate's 2020 production of Harvey, The Miner in Into the Light, Gary in The Exonerated, and Galileo in Starry Messenger . He has also been seen as Feste in BCT’s Twelfth Night in Bangkok. He also acted alongside Chow Yun-fat in Felix Chong’s award winning movie, The Guttenberg Project. Off-Broadway in New York Jason was in Brecht’s Edward II and played Prince Hal in Henry IV Part I as a member of The Riverside Shakespeare Company. In regional theater he portrayed multiple characters in Cyrano de Bergerac with F. Murray Abraham, the Knight in Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Smith in The Bald Soprano, Faust in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Steve in The Starting Five,
Konstantin in The Seagull, Flash Gordon in Flash!, Jonathon Harker in Dracula, and Howie
in Our Town. Jason studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in
London and at UC Berkeley.​

Dan Coffey

Dan worked with the Duck's Breath Mystery Theater of San Francisco for twelve years, supporting himself as an actor and writer. Then he taught theater arts at the University of Iowa until retiring to Thailand ten years ago. Dan has previously appeared in The Gate Theater’s production of I Hate Hamlet playing the ghost of John Barrymore and most recently as Judge Gaffney in Harvey​.

Joseph Coffee

Joe grew up loving the arts in Iowa City, Iowa. He has always enjoyed acting, and was in his first performance at age 9, alongside his father and brother.  He studied theatre in high school and college, and his favorite role was as Lee, in Sam Shepard’s “True West.” Joe also has a passion for singing, cartooning and creative writing.  He came to Chiang Mai in 2017, and has been singing with the Global Harmonies choir, as well as performing with the Gate Theatre in multiple shows.  He most recently appeared in The Dodo Bird during the 2019/2020 season and has been working as an English teacher in South America, as well as Southeast Asia, but in his free time he is an avid yoga enthusiast, a swimming fanatic, and enjoys hiking in the mountains of Thailand.

Kenda Rae

Kenda Appeared in The Amen Corner by James Baldwin during the 2018 season. She has sine performed in the first annual Fringe Festival presented by The Gate during the 2019/2020 season performing her one woman show Back to Me. "Should you surrender yourself to love? One women explores this question. Follow her on a journey from ego death to universal love in a dramatic story told through poetry and song."







Emma Carroll

Em’s revelry in different forms of storytelling began in childhood and culminated in choosing to study film making at university.  She has gone on to write, direct and edit for film and documentary. Still.  She says the real-time rawness of live theatre is something that just can’t be crafted, captured or conveyed in any other medium.  Em has appeared in The Gate productions of Starry Messenger, most recently appeared in The Pirates of Chemotherapy and was Assistant Director for The Dodo Bird during the 2020 season,



Jeff  Bander

Jeff appeared onstage for the first time in 2022 with The Gate Theater’s, 14 Actors in Search of an Audience. That followed with appearances in Echoes of Mystery, Shrapnel in the Heart, and now the role of Maxwell Soto in Restive Souls. He’s appreciative that a long ago interest in theater came to life in Chiang Mai and is grateful for all the guests that show up to support live theater. ​

Ian Charles Broadbent

​Charlie started singing and playing keyboards in bands at 16. A few years later he moved onto the theatre stage, in Jesus Christ Superstar, Let My People Come, Godspell and then for a year as Paddington Bear! Through his career as a musician, he has averaged 4 nights/week, 50 weeks a year as a piano man, in duos, trios, theatre and out front of major rock bands. Also combined with acting in TV shows and commercials. Charlie previously appeared in The Gate Theater’s production of Nuts four years ago. Followed by Hangman Loving the opportunity to be on the Gate Theater stage again in Restive Souls!

Nubian Speakin

Nubian is a poet with many different hats. She is an actor, host, writer, sex/relationship/ and transformation coach, model, and internet radio personality. She was raised in Miami, Florida and currently resides in Chiang Mai. Nubian started as an MC (rapper) back in her adolescent and teenage years. Her love for poetry led her to a different form of expression. With her raw and intimate poetry, it soon lead to writing and performing. Nubian has several film credits, most recently the Spike Lee Film Da 5Bloods, shot here in Chiang Mai. She was last seen on stage with The Gate Theater in For Colored Girls.

Wesley Perkins

Dawitt Abraha

Dawitt has made Chiang Mai his present day home in retirement. This is his fourth stage performance with The Gate Theatre of Chiang Mai.
When he is not performing on stage he is performing out living life in nature, exploring themes, issues pertaining to universal philosophy and political economy. Grateful for The Gate Theatre in making Chiang Mai more livable. ​

Alex Oberheinrich

Alex ​has recently played the role of ‘Jean’ in The Gate’s last production of Hangman, while simultaneously rehearsing for her multiple roles in ‘Shrapnel in the Heart’. She was born and raised in the South of Austria, and has appeared in a few theater and opera productions in Vienna in her 20s. After moving to Chiang Mai in 2019, she rediscovered her love for acting while attending Impro Theater workshops. The Gate’s 10x10x10 production was her first performance followed by Nuts and 15 Actors in Search of an Audience.

Barbara A. K. Franklin

​​As a grad student in international relations, Barbara once dreamed of joining the Foreign Service, a dream she gave up when she saw she disagreed with too many policies.  Yet here she is, at last, U.S. Ambassador to the UN. A Consultant in Communication, Barbara has worked with the UN around the world. She loves theater and has performed with Gate Theatre in Hangman, Shrapnel in the Heart, and Sixteen Actors in Search of a Performance.

NuKola Herndon

​NuKola is a performance poet, host and singer. Utilizing theatricality in all of her performances. She started acting in high school and continued in university; majoring in Communications and Minoring in Theater. As a performance poet, NuKola’s performances include: The National Theatre, London, England; Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham, England; Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia. NuKola’s recent theatrical productions in Chiang Mai include For Colored Girls and her one-woman show, The Nu Element at ‘The Fringe CNX,’ produced by The Gate Theater.

Vinimay Kaul

​is currently living in Chiang Mai, and is happy to be a back 0n stage in The Gate Theater Group play Restive Souls. He has previously appeared with The Gate in Shrapnel in the Heart and The Best Christmas Choir Ever. Growing up in New Delhi, India he was always involved in theatre since childhood and has had the pleasure of contributing as an actor, director, writer, technical director, art design, stage management and music composer. 

​Rychy St. Vincent

Rychy began his professional entertainment career as a radio personality for 17 radio stations across six states and 12 cities for 17 years. During this time, he also performed in several August Wilson stage plays, including Fences. Add to this 12 small parts in movies and a 13 year stent of singing jazz at Cafe Bosa Nova’s in Little Rock, Arkansas and you basically summed up everything he’s done except the puppet shows he built and produced at 10 and 12 years of age.

Marcel Plicka

​Marcel discovered the excitement of standing on stage while playing a scumbag Santa with a French amateur theater group while he was in university. Since then, he has been living in different countries, researching local pun-making traditions whilst honing his own skills in the craft. Marcel has been with The Gate Theater since 2021 and has appeared on stage most recently as the prosecutor in Nuts.

Swan Bay

​​Swan made his theatrical debut in The Gate Theater’s 2023 production of 15 Actors in Search of a Performance. Best known in Chiang Mai and beyond as the front man of the Alt-Dream/Psychedelic Rock band AfterCrush, he is an experienced singer-songwriter and an educator, whose journey began with Indian devotional music. His first Bengali Alternative album Ananya was released in 2010. In 2013, he wrote and performed songs for a Bengali feature film Neel-Lohit (The Red Sea). An olden storyteller at heart, Swan is now exploring theater to expand his craft as a holistic performance artist.

Claire Gordon

Claire is a drama teacher from the UK who has been teaching in secondary schools for over 20 years. She was an active member of The Space Community Theatre in East London, where she performed and directed until leaving British shores to come to Thailand to continue teaching in an International school. Claire began performing with The Gate Theater soon after arriving in Chiang Mai and also twice directed Shrapnel in the Heart for The Gate. However, her most important role is raising her son and giving him the opportunities to thrive and grow. 

​Maitreya Penkar

​Maitreya Penkar (Sound and Graphics Creator)
Amidst other things, Maitreya is an Audiovisual Producer hailing from Mumbai, India. From spinning tunes, making music to writing, producing, directing and editing videos, he has been a versatile creative for years now. With a background in art, journalism and then film studies from the Netherlands, his work revolves around the intersection of these.

Patrick Davis

Amanda Driver

Amanda has been on stage since the 1980s, yes, she's THAT old! Amanda continued to act part-time whilst teaching Drama and, later becoming a LAMDA examiner. She kept her equity card for 36 years until covid hit in 2020 and is now, happily retired. Amanda is excited to be part of the talented theatre group and looking forward to the first performance. 

Jazzie Más

Jazzie has always loved acting and being on stage. Her big break came in the 5th and 6th grades when she played Harriet Tubman—twice! Since then, she’s taken on roles like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz but was told NOT TO SING. Molly Malloy in His Girl Friday, and her most memorable performance as Ida Jackson in The Amen Corner with The Gate Theater, she has appeared in Almost, Maine and other productions. Jazzie is also a stand-up comedian who brings her sharp wit and warmth to audiences across Asia. Originally from Los Angeles, she now calls Chiang Mai home. here to edit.

Dean Sprague

Dean Sprague worked at the State Theatre in Melbourne for eight years and is involved in set, sound, sound FX, tech/lighting, costuming, and a roadie/stage-crew & all-rounder.  He is a qualified chef a swim instructor, and is also an avid musician. Dean is active in the local music scene at open mic gigs, jam sessions in amongst being a board member for SBN (School Broadcasting Network) developing and delivering of youth-led media and projects.  In between gigs he runs two sustainable start-ups and writes corny blues songs.to edit.
