Our Story: A Pioneering Global Legacy
In 2006, The Gate Theater Group opened its doors with a bold mission: to establish Northern Thailand’s first English-language theater. Twenty years later, we have grown into much more than a local stage. We are a US-registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that serves as a vital cultural bridge, producing professional-quality drama both in Chiang Mai and across the United States. As we enter our 20th Anniversary Season, we celebrate our unique status as an international artistic exchange—bringing Western classics to the East and sharing the diverse voices of our Thai home with audiences back in the US.
The Gate Abroad: A Transnational Mission
What sets The Gate apart is our commitment to "Theater Without Borders." Our work doesn't stop at the borders of Thailand. We maintain active roots in the American theater scene, ensuring our productions meet international standards and fostering a "two-way street" for artists. In 2019, we co-produced the first-ever Chiang Mai Fringe Festival in partnership with the EXIT Theatre of San Francisco, bringing a global spotlight to the Northern Thai arts scene. By maintaining our US non-profit status, we provide a transparent, professional framework that allows donors from around the world to support the arts in Southeast Asia with confidence.
